Hospitals are not restful places. Paradoxically, I suspect that most patients are keen to get home to have a good night’s sleep. I do not think I have been awake this early for months.

I have the joy of waking up in St Thomas’ with the spectacular view of Parliament and Big Ben across the river. I pass my enforced confinement counting the windows and identifying every room behind them.

The paternal, authoritative figure of the cardiac consultant arrives. I find him perfectly charming, but it is obvious that to the nurses and junior doctors he is the big white chief. Unwisely I forget my place enough to interrupt one of his questions, and I am gently but firmly reminded that inside the hospital he is the one with status. However, the news is good. There appears to be no reason for me to remain.

It is a wonderful sunny afternoon as we drive back. St James’s Park has never looked more lovely or the tourists more cheerful. There is nothing like a mild intimation of your mortal frailty for reminding you of the beauty of life. Once home, we have a frustrating weekend in which Gaynor works hard in trying to keep me inactive and rested while I try to explain to her that nothing makes me more stressed than doing nothing. However, I admit that as a result of her efforts I feel more rested on Sunday night than I have for a long time.
